Both Z Fold 8 models are on sale now. What each costs, which one suits you, whether to upgrade from a Z Fold 7 — and when the Z Fold 9 is...
Editorial
The short answer
Pre-orders are long over — both models launched 22 July 2026 and are widely available now.
Z Fold 8 Ultra from US$2,099 · Z Fold 8 from US$1,899 · Z Fold 7 now around US$1,074.
Already on a Z Fold 7? The honest answer is hold unless charging speed is your pain point. Reasoning below.
This guide originally covered pre-order timing. The phones have shipped, so it now covers what most people actually search for after launch: what to pay, which model to choose, and whether upgrading is worth it.

The value pick, stated plainly
The Z Fold 7 at roughly half the Ultra's price is the best value foldable on the market right now. It has the same folded body, the same 200MP main camera, the same 8-inch inner display and the same IP48 rating as the Z Fold 8 Ultra. You give up charging speed, 600 mAh of battery, the newer chip and a better ultrawide.
Which model is right for you
Samsung's naming makes this harder than it should be. The Ultra is the Z Fold 7's successor — same tall, narrow shape. The plainly-named Z Fold 8 is the new one: shorter, wider, 4:3.
| Your priority | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Camera quality | Ultra | 200MP main plus a 3× telephoto. The standard Z Fold 8 has no telephoto at all. |
| Reading, documents, split-screen | Z Fold 8 | The 4:3 inner panel is a much better shape for pages than a tall 8-inch display. |
| Pocket comfort | Ultra | 72.8 mm wide folded versus 123.9 mm. The Z Fold 8 is a genuinely wide object. |
| Battery life | Either | GSMArena measured 13:59h on the Z Fold 8 and 13:06h on the Ultra despite the smaller cell. |
| Lightest in hand | Z Fold 8 | 201 g versus 215 g. |
| Reusing your existing cases | Ultra | Identical folded footprint to the Z Fold 7. The Z Fold 8 needs all-new accessories. |
Should you upgrade from a Galaxy Z Fold 7?
This is the most common question we get, and the honest answer is that the Z Fold 8 Ultra is a refinement, not a reinvention.
What you actually gain:
- Charging speed. 25W to 45W wired, 15W to 20W wireless. Samsung quotes 67% in 30 minutes. This is the one change you feel every day.
- Endurance. 4,400 to 5,000 mAh in the same body — GSMArena measured 13:06h active use against 11:44h.
- Ultrawide camera. 12MP to 50MP.
- Brightness. 2,600 to 3,000 nits peak.
- Longer software runway — Android 17 with seven OS updates ahead of it.
What does not change: the folded size, the weight, the IP48 rating, the 8-inch inner display, the 200MP main camera and the 3× telephoto.
Our take: if your Z Fold 7 battery still gets you through a day, hold. If you are charging twice a day, or you are on a Z Fold 5 or 6, the Ultra is a real upgrade.
Which case do you need?
We design foldable cases, so this is the part we can answer precisely.
Folded, the Z Fold 8 Ultra measures 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm and weighs 215 g — identical to the Z Fold 7. Only the unfolded thickness changed, from 4.2 mm to 4.1 mm, and a case wraps the closed device. So a well-made Z Fold 7 case should transfer.
The caveat worth taking seriously: published specifications do not cover camera-island geometry or button placement, and those are exactly what break a fit. Confirm the seller lists Z Fold 8 Ultra compatibility rather than assuming.
If you bought the standard Z Fold 8
Nothing carries over. It folds to 81.9 × 123.9 × 9.7 mm — shorter, much wider and thicker than any previous Z Fold. Be sceptical of any listing claiming to fit "Z Fold 8, 7, 6 and 5", because those geometries are not compatible.

Browse the range →When is the Galaxy Z Fold 9 coming?
Samsung has not announced it, and no credible specifications exist yet. What we can offer is the release pattern:
- Galaxy Z Fold 6 — July 2024
- Galaxy Z Fold 7 — 25 July 2025
- Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra — 22 July 2026
Three consecutive July launches. On that cadence a Z Fold 9 would land around July 2027 — but treat that as an inference from Samsung's schedule, not information. We will update this section when there is something real to report.
Practically: if you are reading this in late 2026 or early 2027, you are near the middle of the cycle. Buying now gives you the better part of a year before a successor exists, and Z Fold 8 pricing typically softens through Q1.
Frequently asked questions
Can you still pre-order the Galaxy Z Fold 8?
No. Pre-orders closed before the 22 July 2026 release. Both models are in general sale now, and launch pre-order bonuses such as storage upgrades and trade-in boosts have ended.
Where should I buy the Galaxy Z Fold 8?
Samsung direct usually offers the strongest trade-in valuations, while major retailers and carriers discount more aggressively a few months post-launch. If you are not trading in an old device, it is worth comparing both.
Is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 worth it over the Z Fold 7?
If you already own a Z Fold 7, the meaningful gains are 45W charging, a 5,000 mAh battery and a 50MP ultrawide. The screen, main camera, folded size and weight are unchanged. Most Z Fold 7 owners can comfortably wait. Z Fold 5 and 6 owners will notice a much larger difference.
Which Galaxy Z Fold 8 has the better battery?
The Ultra has the larger cell at 5,000 mAh versus 4,800 mAh, but GSMArena measured slightly longer active use on the standard Z Fold 8 — 13:59h against 13:06h — likely because it drives a smaller, lower-resolution display.
Do Galaxy Z Fold 7 cases fit the Z Fold 8 Ultra?
The folded dimensions are identical — 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm — and both weigh 215 g, so a well-made Z Fold 7 case should fit. Confirm camera-cutout compatibility with the seller, since that detail is not covered by published dimensions.
When will the Galaxy Z Fold 9 be released?
Samsung has not announced it. The Z Fold 6, 7 and 8 all launched in July of their respective years, so July 2027 is the pattern-based expectation — not a confirmed date.
