iPhone Duo Screen Protector: Inner vs Outer Screen (2026)
Short answer
Does the iPhone Duo need a screen protector? On the outside, yes: put tempered glass on the 5.4-inch outer screen, or use a case with the glass built in. On the inside, no: the 7.6-inch inner screen ships with Apple's matte cover layer, which Apple replaces for US$19 with AppleCare+ or US$49 without. Don't peel it off, and don't stick rigid glass over the fold.
We don't sell a standalone iPhone Duo screen protector. Our Spineguard P1 has 9H cover-screen glass built in, and the iPhone Duo version of the Axon M2 includes a tempered-glass cover-screen protector.

The iPhone Duo has two screens, and they need opposite treatment. We make iPhone Duo cases, two of them with cover-screen glass, so we have an interest here. What follows about Apple's displays comes from Apple or from named third-party tests. We haven't measured a retail iPhone Duo ourselves.
Does the iPhone Duo need a screen protector?
The outer screen does. The inner screen already has one.
| Outer display | Inner display | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 5.4 inches | 7.6 inches, folds along the centre |
| Surface | Ceramic Shield 2 | Nano-texture finish on a replaceable matte cover layer |
| Scratch test (JerryRigEverything) | Scratched at Mohs level 7 | Scratched at Mohs level 2 |
| What to put on it | Tempered glass, or a case with built-in glass | Nothing. Keep Apple's cover layer on |
Specs: Apple. Scratch results: JerryRigEverything, reported by MacRumors.
Closed, the outer screen meets keys, benchtops and pocket grit, while the inner screen folds shut on itself. Full specs are in our iPhone Duo dimensions and specs guide.
Can you put a screen protector on the iPhone Duo inner screen?
You can buy them, but we wouldn't fit one. The inner display already has its protector: a matte nano-texture cover layer fitted at the factory, which Apple replaces.
What Apple's cover layer is
Apple's vice president of hardware engineering, Kate Bergeron, said: "It's actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer that you can peel off that layer and get a new one" (reported by MacRumors). MacRumors adds that the layer helps hide the crease, and that replacement will likely be limited to Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers.
Apple's US fee for a new cover layer is US$19 with AppleCare+ and US$49 without, the cheapest repair on the phone. So the layer already does a screen protector's job: it takes the wear, and it is cheap to swap.
Don't peel it
Bergeron's "peel off" describes Apple swapping the layer, not a job for the kitchen table. The layer is the matte finish, so removing it takes away the nano-texture surface and the layer that softens the crease. If it wears, book Apple's replacement.
It is soft, and that is expected
In JerryRigEverything's test the inner surface scratched at Mohs level 2, though the reviewer credited the nano-texture coating with making marks "magically disappear" (MacRumors). HTX Studio left light scratches on it with a 6H pencil (iThinkDifferent). That argues for a replaceable layer, not glass on top.
Why rigid glass and the fold don't mix
Tempered glass doesn't bend, and the inner screen bends along its centre every time you close the phone. Glass would have to stop short of the fold or come in two halves, leaving the crease bare, and it would add thickness to a surface that closes onto itself. A film has its own problem: it becomes the surface you touch, so it covers the nano-texture finish.
Apple's guidance points the same way. The first manual test in its iPhone Duo hinge troubleshooting guide is "Remove any third-party cases or screen protectors."
A protector can't stop the hinge-line cracks
Since launch day, owners have reported inner screens cracking along the hinge, often with a line of bright or green pixels. Apple's statement: "We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement." No protector or case can prevent a hardware fault, so if your screen shows that line, go to Apple. We cover the reports and teardowns in iPhone Duo hinge problems, screen cracks and IP68.
What screen protector should go on the iPhone Duo outer screen?
Tempered glass. The 5.4-inch outer display sits behind Ceramic Shield 2 and scratched at Mohs level 7 in JerryRigEverything's test, five levels harder than the inner screen. It still earns a protector:
- It is the exposed screen. Closed, it faces out in your pocket, on the table and in your bag.
- Scratch resistance isn't crack resistance. A Mohs result tells you what scratches the glass, not what happens when the phone lands face down.
- Glass is cheaper than a display. Apple's US fee for outer display damage is US$379 without AppleCare+ (US$29 with). A protector is a layer you can replace yourself.
Note that "9H" on a protector is a pencil-hardness grade, not a Mohs level, so the two aren't directly comparable.
What to look for in an iPhone Duo outer screen protector
- Cut for the Duo's 5.4-inch outer display, not a Galaxy Z Fold cover screen.
- Edges that stay clear of your case's front frame, so the frame doesn't lift the glass.
- A dust-free install. Apple's own case instructions start with a phone that is free of dust or debris.
- If the glass or your case covers the screen's left edge, use Shift Left Edge (below).
iPhone Duo cases with built-in cover-screen glass: our options
We don't sell a standalone iPhone Duo screen protector, and our Ion Glass protector is for Galaxy Z Fold models only. For the Duo, the glass comes with the case. Each option below is made in a separate mould for the iPhone Duo and leaves the inner screen alone.
| Product | Outer screen | Cameras | Hinge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spineguard P1 | Built-in 9H tempered glass | CNC-machined metal lens rings | Spring-loaded spine cover that slides as you fold |
| Axon M2 | Duo version includes a tempered-glass cover-screen protector | Raised bezel around the camera module | Rigid wrap-around hinge cover |
| Kinetic P1 | Snap-on front frame guards the edges (no glass) | Duo version adds a tempered-glass lens guard | Full-length hinge cover |
| Tempered Camera Lens Protector | Not covered | Tempered glass with an aluminium ring per lens | Not covered |
Spineguard P1: glass, hinge cover and stand in one
The simplest answer to this guide. The 9H cover-display glass is part of the case, so there is nothing to buy or apply separately. The spring-loaded spine cover keeps the hinge covered in every fold position, and the N52 MagSafe ring doubles as a 360-degree kickstand.
Axon M2: metal frame and a cover-screen protector
The iPhone Duo version includes a tempered-glass cover-screen protector. Around it are an aerospace-grade alloy frame, a rigid wrap-around hinge cover and a metal ring that works as a grip, folds out to 180 degrees as a stand and acts as a MagSafe mount point.
Kinetic P1 and the lens protector: the cameras
The rear lenses are the other glass on the outside. The Duo version of the Kinetic P1 adds a tempered-glass lens guard but has no cover-screen glass. Our Tempered Camera Lens Protector comes in an iPhone Duo version: tempered glass over each rear lens, with an aviation-aluminium ring that lifts the edge above flat surfaces.

Does your case or protector cover the outer screen's left edge? Use Shift Left Edge
Shift Left Edge moves the outer display's content inward, so nothing sits under a case frame or protector that overlaps the left edge. Apple's setup guide for its own iPhone Duo Case says a prompt appears after you fit the case, and that the setting "shifts the outer display content to accommodate the front portion of the case". Our Apple iPhone Duo Case vs Folio comparison covers Apple's two cases.
How to turn on Shift Left Edge
- Open Settings on your iPhone Duo.
- Tap Display & Brightness.
- Turn on Shift Left Edge, then tap Enable in the prompt.
MacRumors says the screen goes black briefly to apply it (it isn't a full restart) and that you can turn it on any time for third-party cases. You'll then see a narrow black border down the left side of the outer screen.
Should you use it?
Only if something covers the edge, because it gives up a strip of a 5.4-inch screen. We haven't measured a retail iPhone Duo, so we can't yet say whether our cases' front frames reach that edge. If content looks clipped with your case on, switch it on.
How much does an iPhone Duo screen repair cost?
These are Apple's published US estimates:
| Repair | Without AppleCare+ | With AppleCare+ |
|---|---|---|
| Inner display cover layer | US$49 | US$19 |
| Outer display | US$379 | US$29 |
| Inner display | US$999 | US$99 |
iThinkDifferent notes these are estimates, with the final fee set after inspection. The gap between US$49 and US$999 is the case for leaving the cover layer alone.
iPhone Duo screen repair in Australia
We couldn't find Australian prices for these repairs, so check Apple's Australian repair estimator for your model. Apple's Australian site says that, due to local regulations, AppleCare coverage can be purchased four days after your device is shipped or picked up, and that you can get a new plan through the Settings app for 60 days after purchase. If the inner screen develops the hinge-line fault, contact Apple first.
Frequently asked questions
Does the iPhone Duo need a screen protector?
Only on the outer screen. Put tempered glass on the 5.4-inch outer display, or use a case with built-in cover-screen glass. The 7.6-inch inner display already has Apple's matte cover layer, which acts as its protector and which Apple replaces for US$19 with AppleCare+ or US$49 without. Leave that layer on.
Can you put a screen protector on the iPhone Duo inner screen?
We wouldn't. Rigid tempered glass can't bend with the fold, so it would leave the crease bare, and any film covers the nano-texture finish. Apple's hinge troubleshooting guide asks owners to remove third-party screen protectors as a first step. The factory cover layer is the inner screen's protector, and Apple replaces it when it wears.
Should I peel off the iPhone Duo's inner screen layer?
No. The matte nano-texture cover layer is fitted at the factory, helps hide the crease, and is a part Apple replaces for you: US$19 with AppleCare+ or US$49 without in the US. Peeling it yourself removes the matte finish and leaves nothing over the panel. If it wears or marks, book Apple's replacement.
What screen protector should I use on the iPhone Duo outer screen?
Tempered glass made for the iPhone Duo's 5.4-inch outer display, not a Galaxy Z Fold size. Check that its edges stay clear of your case's front frame. Or skip the separate protector: our Spineguard P1 has 9H cover-screen glass built in, and the Duo version of the Axon M2 includes a tempered-glass cover-screen protector.
Does FoldifyCase sell an iPhone Duo screen protector?
Not as a standalone product. Our Ion Glass protector is for Galaxy Z Fold models only. For the iPhone Duo, cover-screen glass comes with two of our cases: the Spineguard P1, with built-in 9H glass, and the Axon M2, whose Duo version includes a tempered-glass protector. We also sell a tempered camera lens protector in an iPhone Duo version.
What is Shift Left Edge on the iPhone Duo?
It is a setting that moves the outer screen's content inward, so a case frame or protector covering the left edge doesn't hide anything. Turn it on in Settings, Display & Brightness, Shift Left Edge, then tap Enable. Apple's iPhone Duo Case prompts you to turn it on, and you can enable it for third-party cases too.
