Z Fold 7 vs Z Fold 8 Ultra: What Changed & What Still Fits

  • 9 min de lectura
  • Por Caleb Tran

Fold 8 vs Fold 7, short answer: the difference between the Z Fold 7 and Z Fold 8 Ultra is charging, battery and a revised hinge, not size. Folded, both measure 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm and weigh 215 g; the Ultra adds 45W wired and 20W wireless charging, a 5,000mAh battery, a 50MP ultrawide and a brighter 3,000-nit screen. The other Z Fold 8, the wide model, is a different shape altogether.

Will your case fit? A Z Fold 7 case should carry over to the Ultra once you've checked the camera cut-out, but not to the wide Z Fold 8. Our Z Fold 7 case fit guide for the Ultra has the full check.

What this is: every difference between the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 line, written as a diff, like a changelog. We mark each line CHANGED, NEW or UNCHANGED, and because we design cases for a living, we add the one column no tech site gives you: what each change does to case fit. Both Z Fold 8 models launched on 22 July 2026; every figure below is from Samsung's confirmed specifications.

Every other Z Fold 7-vs-8 comparison stops at "the camera is better." This one answers the question a Fold owner actually has at upgrade time: if I switch phones, does any of my gear come with me? This year, the answer depends on which Z Fold 8 you buy.

Z Fold 7 vs Z Fold 8 Ultra: what changed

Charging, battery, the ultrawide camera, screen brightness, the chip and the hinge changed; the folded size, weight, screen sizes, main and telephoto cameras and IP48 rating did not. Samsung split the line in two. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is the direct successor to the Z Fold 7 (same tall book shape), so that's the diff below. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 is a new, wider body; it gets its own entry at the end. Green NEW lines are additions; amber CHANGED lines are modifications; grey UNCHANGED lines stay put.

UNCHANGED · FOLDED SIZE

158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm → 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm

Identical. Case impact: this is why Z Fold 7 cases carry over to the Z Fold 8 Ultra. A case wraps the closed phone, and the closed phone hasn't changed size.

UNCHANGED · WEIGHT

215 g → 215 g

Same heft, same balance. Case impact: none.

CHANGED · UNFOLDED THICKNESS

4.2 mm → 4.1 mm

The only dimensional change. Case impact: none. A case wraps the device when it's closed, so a tenth of a millimetre on the open panel doesn't affect fit.

UNCHANGED · DISPLAY SIZES

8.0″ inner · 6.5″ cover → 8.0″ inner · 6.5″ cover

The inner panel's resolution rises from 1968 × 2184 to 2256 × 2504, but both screens stay the same size. Case impact: none expected, since the screen sizes and body are the same.

CHANGED · PEAK BRIGHTNESS

2,600 nits → 3,000 nits

A brighter panel for outdoor use. Case impact: none.

UNCHANGED · MAIN & TELEPHOTO CAMERAS

200MP main + 10MP 3× → 200MP main + 10MP 3×

The Z Fold 7 already had the 200MP main camera and 3× telephoto; both carry over. Case impact: see the ultrawide line below.

CHANGED · ULTRAWIDE CAMERA

12MP → 50MP

A meaningful resolution bump on the ultrawide. Case impact: the one thing to check. Published specs don't describe camera-island geometry, so confirm the case you own or buy lists the Z Fold 8 Ultra; ours say so on the product page.

The camera cut-out is the one detail published dimensions don't settle, and it's what to check when a Z Fold 7 case moves to a Z Fold 8 Ultra.

CHANGED · BATTERY

4,400mAh → 5,000mAh (+600mAh)

A silicon-carbon cell in the same body. GSMArena measured 13:06h active use against 11:44h on the Z Fold 7. Case impact: none, because the folded thickness didn't change.

CHANGED · CHARGING

25W wired · 15W wireless → 45W wired · 20W wireless

The upgrade you'll notice daily: Samsung quotes 67% in 30 minutes. Case impact: none, but neither model lists built-in magnets, so a MagSafe-style charger or mount needs a magnetic case.

CHANGED · PROCESSOR & SOFTWARE

Snapdragon 8 Elite · Android 16 → Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 · Android 17

Newer silicon, One UI 9 and seven OS updates ahead of it. Case impact: none. Listed for completeness.

UNCHANGED · WATER RESISTANCE & S PEN

IP48 · no S Pen → IP48 · no S Pen

The Z Fold 7 dropped S Pen support and the Z Fold 8 Ultra doesn't bring it back. The S Pen Fold Edition and S Pen Pro only work with the Z Fold 3, 4, 5 and 6 (see our Z Fold S-Pen guide). Case impact: none, and no case can add S Pen support.

CHANGED · PRICE

Z Fold 7 now ~US$1,074 → Z Fold 8 Ultra from US$2,099

The Z Fold 7 has dropped to roughly half the Ultra's launch price. Case impact: none, but it makes the Z Fold 7 the value pick, and your case works on either.

NEW · GALAXY Z FOLD 8 (THE WIDE MODEL)

158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm → 123.9 × 81.9 × 9.7 mm

The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 (known before launch as the "Z Fold 8 Wide") is a new shorter, wider phone: a 7.6-inch 4:3 inner screen, 5.5-inch cover screen, 50MP + 50MP cameras with no telephoto, 4,800mAh and 201 g, from US$1,899. Case impact: nothing carries over. No Z Fold 7, 6 or 5 case fits it.

Hinge and thickness

Thickness is unchanged where it counts: folded, the Z Fold 7 and Z Fold 8 Ultra are both 8.9 mm thick, and unfolded the Ultra is a tenth of a millimetre thinner at 4.1 mm against 4.2 mm. Both weigh 215 g.

Z Fold 7 Z Fold 8 Ultra Z Fold 8 (wide)
Folded thickness 8.9 mm 8.9 mm 9.7 mm
Unfolded thickness 4.2 mm 4.1 mm 4.5 mm
Weight 215 g 215 g 201 g

The hinge is where the Fold 8 vs Fold 7 difference is felt rather than measured. Samsung revised it for both Z Fold 8 models: it told media the hinge tension is lighter, so the magnets that hold the phone shut don't need to be as strong, and the chassis leaves a bit more of a gap along the long edge for your fingers. The result, per 9to5Google's hands-on, is a phone that's much easier to open than the Z Fold 7, with a much less visible crease. For the wide Z Fold 8, Samsung quotes a hinge rating of 500,000 folds.

None of this changes the folded footprint, which is why it doesn't affect case fit. For what tends to wear out first over years of folding, see our guide to Galaxy Z Fold 8 hinge durability.

How our case range maps to each Z Fold 8

Fold 8 vs Fold 7: upgrade, or hold?

Strip away the spec sheet and it comes down to four honest reads.

  • The case for upgrading to the Z Fold 8 Ultra: 45W wired and 20W wireless charging, 600mAh more battery, a 50MP ultrawide, a brighter panel, an easier-opening hinge and seven OS updates, and your cases come with you. If you're charging twice a day, or you're on a Z Fold 5 or 6, it's a real upgrade.
  • The case for buying a Z Fold 7 now: at around US$1,074 it's roughly half the Ultra's launch price, with the same folded body, the same 200MP main camera, the same 8-inch inner display and the same IP48 rating.
  • The case for staying on your Z Fold 7: if your battery still gets you through the day, hold. When your current case wears out, replace it like-for-like; it'll still fit if you move to the Ultra later.
  • The case for the standard Z Fold 8: if you want the 4:3 inner screen for reading and split-screen, it's a genuinely different phone, so plan on new cases. Our Z Fold 8 vs Z Fold 8 Ultra comparison weighs the two.

The rule this year is simple: Z Fold 7 → Z Fold 8 Ultra keeps your case; Z Fold 7 → Z Fold 8 means a new one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Z Fold 7 and Z Fold 8?

It depends which Z Fold 8. The Z Fold 8 Ultra is the direct successor: same folded size and weight, with faster 45W charging, a 5,000mAh battery, a 50MP ultrawide and a brighter screen. The standard Z Fold 8 is a new wider model (123.9 × 81.9 × 9.7 mm folded) with a 7.6-inch 4:3 inner screen and no telephoto.

What are the main differences between the Z Fold 7 and Z Fold 8 Ultra?

Charging rises from 25W wired and 15W wireless to 45W and 20W, the battery grows from 4,400mAh to 5,000mAh, the ultrawide goes from 12MP to 50MP, peak brightness goes from 2,600 to 3,000 nits, and the chip moves to Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with Android 17. The folded size, weight, 8.0-inch and 6.5-inch displays, 200MP main camera, 3× telephoto and IP48 rating are unchanged.

Did Samsung change the hinge on the Z Fold 8?

Yes. Samsung revised the hinge for both Z Fold 8 models: the tension is lighter, so the magnets that hold it shut don't need to be as strong, and the chassis leaves a bit more finger gap along the long edge. It opens more easily than the Z Fold 7, and 9to5Google reports a much less visible crease.

Is the Z Fold 8 Ultra thicker than the Z Fold 7?

No. Folded, both are 8.9 mm thick and measure 158.4 × 72.8 mm; unfolded, the Z Fold 8 Ultra is slightly thinner at 4.1 mm against 4.2 mm. Both weigh 215 g. The wide Z Fold 8 is the thicker phone at 9.7 mm folded and 4.5 mm unfolded.

Does the Z Fold 8 or Z Fold 8 Ultra support the S Pen?

No. Neither Z Fold 8 model supports the S Pen, and the Z Fold 7 didn't either. The S Pen Fold Edition and S Pen Pro only work with the Z Fold 3, 4, 5 and 6, and no case can add S Pen support.
