The short answer
Apple announces its foldable on 9 September 2026. Cases will appear online the same day. Almost none of them will fit properly, because on 9 September nobody outside Apple has held the device.
A case that genuinely fits requires a shipping unit, measured. That is not pessimism — it is the sequence, and we can show you it happening right now with a phone that launched six weeks ago.
We design cases for folding phones. This is the part of a launch that nobody in our industry likes to explain, so we are going to explain it.

The proof is six weeks old
On 22 July 2026, Samsung launched two foldables on the same stage. What happened to case availability afterwards was completely different for each — and the reason is a single number.
The Z Fold 8 Ultra: cases on day one
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra folds to 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm and weighs 215 g. The Galaxy Z Fold 7, from 2025, folds to 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm and weighs 215 g.
Identical. The only dimensional change is unfolded thickness, 4.2 mm to 4.1 mm — and a case wraps the phone when it is closed, so that does not matter.
Which meant existing tooling carried straight over. We have ten cases listed for the Z Fold 8 Ultra because the moulds already existed. Anyone who had done the engineering for the Z Fold 7 was ready on launch day.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8: still waiting
The other phone Samsung launched that day — the wider Galaxy Z Fold 8 — folds to 81.9 × 123.9 × 9.7 mm. Shorter, much broader, thicker. Nothing about that geometry is shared with any previous Z Fold.
That device is six weeks old at the time of writing, and purpose-built cases for it are still not a solved problem — including for us. Same manufacturer, same launch event, same engineering team, and the availability outcome was completely different. The only variable was whether the footprint changed.
Now apply that to Apple
Apple's foldable has no predecessor at all. There is no previous Apple foldable whose tooling can carry over, no established camera-island geometry, no known hinge clearance. It is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 situation, except starting from zero rather than from an adjacent product line.
What actually has to happen before a case fits
Between "Apple announced a phone" and "you can buy a case that fits it", this is the sequence. None of it can start before a retail unit exists.
- Get a shipping device. Not a render, not leaked CAD — a retail unit. Everything downstream depends on this.
- Measure it. Folded and unfolded dimensions, camera island footprint and height, button positions and travel, port placement, hinge clearance, magnet array location and polarity.
- Model and tool. CAD from the measurements, then cut steel. This is the expensive, slow, irreversible step — a tool cut to a wrong dimension is scrap.
- Sample and fit-test. First shots against the real device. Buttons must actuate. The camera ring must clear the lenses. The case must not touch the inner panel when closed.
- Revise. There is almost always a revision. Camera islands are usually where it goes wrong.
- Produce and ship.
Every one of those steps is gated on step one. That is the whole reason the wait exists, and it is why any case on sale before the device ships was made by skipping straight to step three with guessed numbers.
Our iPhone Fold collection is empty. That is deliberate.

We could fill it tomorrow with shells moulded from leaked dimensions, the way the market will on 9 September. We are not going to, because we would be selling you something we could not honestly claim fits — and on a phone reported at US$2,000 or more, a case that nearly fits is worse than no case.
What will flood the market instead
Within hours of the keynote you will see listings. Here is how to read them.

The camera cutout is where these fail most often. A cutout a millimetre off looks fine in photos and leaves your lenses proud of the case, which is exactly where drop damage starts.
What to do in the gap
- Buy a screen protector first. Screen protection is dimensionally simpler than a case and reaches market faster.
- Carry it carefully for the first few weeks. A first-generation hinge with no field record deserves caution.
- Wait for a case measured against a retail unit, and check the seller says so explicitly.
- Do not buy on launch day. Nothing available then was measured, because it could not have been.

The honest version of the trade-off
If you buy a launch-day case, you get protection immediately and accept a real chance the fit is wrong. If you wait, you carry an expensive folding phone unprotected for a while and then get something that actually works.
We think waiting is right on a first-generation foldable, but it is your call and both positions are defensible. What is not defensible is a seller telling you on 9 September that they have measured a phone they have never held.
Frequently asked questions
How long after launch will iPhone Fold cases actually be available?
Long enough for someone to obtain a retail unit, measure it, cut tooling, sample, fit-test and produce. That sequence cannot begin before the device ships. As a live reference: Samsung's wider Galaxy Z Fold 8 launched on 22 July 2026 and purpose-built cases for that new footprint were still not a solved problem six weeks later.
Why can't case makers just use the leaked dimensions?
Some do, and that is what most launch-day listings are. Leaked figures are usually close on overall size and wrong on the details that decide fit — camera island height and footprint, button travel, magnet positions. Tooling cut to a wrong dimension is scrap, so responsible makers wait.
Will a Galaxy Z Fold case fit Apple's foldable?
No. For scale on how precise this is: Samsung's own Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra folds to 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm and its Galaxy Z Fold 8 folds to 81.9 × 123.9 × 9.7 mm. Two phones from one manufacturer launched the same day, and no case fits both. An Apple foldable is a different object again.
What should I use to protect it in the meantime?
A screen protector is the practical first purchase, since screen protection is dimensionally simpler and reaches market sooner than a case. Beyond that, carry it carefully and wait for a case that has been measured against a shipping device.
