What we can and cannot tell you
We are not going to invent a price. Apple sets regional pricing independently, publishes it during the keynote, and any figure circulating before then is a guess. What we can do is give you the confirmed reference points the market will be judged against.

Why we will not convert that to Australian dollars
Apple does not price by exchange rate. Australian RRP includes GST and is set independently, so multiplying a US figure gives you a number that is confidently wrong. The same applies to UK and EU pricing, which include VAT.
Apple publishes local pricing during the keynote and on its regional store pages immediately after. That is the moment to check — not before.
The line item people forget
Here is the part we can speak to with authority, because it is our job.
On a slab phone, protection is a rounding error. On a folding phone it is a different calculation, for one reason: the failure modes are more expensive. A foldable has an inner display bonded across a hinge, and that assembly is the single costliest component to replace on the device. A cracked outer screen on a slab phone is a bad afternoon. A damaged inner panel on a foldable is a significant fraction of what the phone cost.
That changes the maths. Protection on a foldable is not an accessory purchase — it is insurance against the one repair you really do not want.
What to set aside

A case designed for the specific device. Not a universal shell, not a slab-phone case adapted. On a folding phone the case is doing structural work, not just cosmetic.

Screen protection for the cover display. The outer screen takes the table drops and the pocket keys.

Realistically, budget for the first case being replaced. First-generation devices attract first-generation cases, and fit revisions are common in the opening weeks.
We are not going to put a dollar figure on that here, because case pricing for a device nobody has measured does not exist yet. What we will say is that treating protection as an afterthought on a two-thousand-dollar folding phone is the expensive choice.
The timing question
Two things worth knowing about the buying window.
Pre-orders normally open the Friday after the keynote, with devices on sale the following Friday. That is the recent iPhone pattern, not a commitment for this device — Apple publishes the actual schedule on the day.

Is there a cheaper way in?
If the price lands where reporting suggests and that is more than you want to spend on a first-generation device, the honest alternative is worth naming: the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is currently around US$1,074 — roughly half the Z Fold 8 Ultra — and it is a mature, proven foldable with a fully developed case ecosystem.
That is not a recommendation to buy Samsung over Apple. It is context. A first-generation foldable from any manufacturer carries first-generation risk, and paying a premium for that is a choice you should make deliberately rather than by default.
