iPhone Duo Apple Pencil: Which Works & Can a Case Hold It?

Only the Apple Pencil (USB-C) works with the iPhone Duo, from later in 2026. At 155 mm it's 37 mm longer than the folded phone, so no case can carry it.

The short version

The iPhone Duo is the first iPhone to support Apple Pencil — on both displays. But it works with only the Apple Pencil (USB-C), not the Apple Pencil Pro, and support arrives later in 2026, not on launch day.

And here is the part nobody selling "Apple Pencil holder" cases will tell you: that Pencil is 155 mm long. The Duo is 117.8 mm tall. No slot on the spine of this phone can hold it.

Which Apple Pencil works with the iPhone Duo?

Apple says the Duo supports the Apple Pencil (USB-C), which costs US$79. It works on both the 7.6-inch inner display and the 5.4-inch cover display.

Why not the Pencil Pro? Apple has not said. The likely reason, as MacRumors points out, is charging: the Pencil Pro pairs and charges magnetically on the side of an iPad, and the Duo has no surface for that. The USB-C model charges through a port under a sliding cap, so it needs nothing from the phone.

If you already own a Pencil Pro for an iPad, it will not carry over. That is a US$79 purchase to budget for on top of the phone.

When does it actually start working?

Not on 23 October. The Duo ships with iOS 27.1, and Apple says Apple Pencil support arrives "later this year" without naming the software update that turns it on. If Pencil support is the reason you are buying a Duo, you are buying it on a promise with no date attached yet.

Worth knowing: MacRumors has reported that Apple developed a shorter Apple Pencil intended to launch alongside the Duo and shelved it before production. Apple has not confirmed that. If it is true, it explains a great deal about the problem below.

What the USB-C Pencil can and cannot do

It is Apple's entry-level Pencil, and it is missing a lot of what iPad owners are used to:

For handwriting, annotation and marking up documents, that is plenty. For drawing, no pressure sensitivity is a real limitation.

The length problem

This is where our job as case designers comes in, because it is a straightforward measurement problem.

The Duo folds along its 117.8 mm edge. That edge — the spine — is the natural place to put a stylus slot, and it is where Samsung-style S Pen cases put one. On the Duo, an Apple Pencil in that position would stick out 37 mm past the end of the phone. That is not a case; it is a lever that snaps off the first time you sit down.

Unfolded, the phone is still only 117.8 mm tall. There is no orientation of a closed Duo that is as long as the Pencil.

So when you see a listing for an "iPhone Duo case with Apple Pencil holder", one of three things is true: the holder is a loop that lets most of the Pencil hang outside the case, it is built for a different, shorter stylus, or it was designed before anyone checked the numbers.

How to actually carry a Pencil with a Duo

Carry it separately. Unglamorous and the most reliable. A jacket pocket, a bag pen loop, or a slim pen sleeve.
Use a short passive stylus for quick jobs. A slim capacitive stylus behaves like a precise fingertip: no tilt, no Pencil features, but it is short enough to live in a spine slot and it works for tapping and quick notes.
Wait for a shorter Apple Pencil. If the reported short Pencil ever ships, the storage problem changes overnight. Nothing about that is confirmed.

One thing to think about before you write on the inner screen

The Duo's inner display is not glass on top. It is a custom polymer over high-strength glass with a Nano Texture finish — softer than the Ceramic Shield 2 on the outside, and coated. Apple has published no guidance on how that surface wears under a Pencil tip over months of use, and no repair pricing for the panel.

That is not a reason to avoid the Pencil. It is a reason to keep the tip clean and replace it when it wears, and to avoid dragging anything gritty across the fold. We go through the materials in detail in our hinge and durability breakdown.

What our Kinetic P1 slot holds — honestly

We make the Kinetic P1, a hinge case with a stylus slot along the spine, and it is one of the cases in our iPhone Duo collection. On a Galaxy Z Fold 5 or 6, that slot carries the S Pen; the Z Fold 7 and Z Fold 8 Ultra do not support S Pen, so on those models it holds a slim capacitive stylus. On the iPhone Duo version, the slot runs the length of a 117.8 mm spine, so it holds a slim stylus shorter than the phone — not an Apple Pencil (USB-C).

We are not going to quote you a maximum stylus length from a mould cut to Apple's published dimensions but not yet checked against a retail unit. We will measure the slot against a retail Duo the week it ships and publish the exact figure, along with which short styluses fit.
