Motorola Razr Fold vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra

Short answer: in the Motorola Razr Fold vs Samsung Fold 8 decision, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is the safer buy for most people: a hinge with a long track record, a deep case range and Z Fold 7 accessories that carry over. Pick the Razr Fold if a 6,000mAh battery, 80W charging and a 6,000-nit inner screen matter more to you.

Up front: we make cases for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold line (Z Fold 5, 6 and 7, and since the 22 July 2026 launch, the Z Fold 8 Ultra and the Z Fold 8). We have a horse in this race. We don't make or sell cases for the Motorola Razr Fold, and the reason why is the most useful thing in this article. Updated 29 September 2026.

Which Z Fold 8? The Razr Fold's like-for-like rival is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, the tall book-style Z Fold with an 8-inch inner screen and a 6.5-inch cover screen, so that's the Samsung column below. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 is a shorter, wider 4:3 phone and a different comparison; see Z Fold 8 vs Z Fold 8 Ultra: which to buy.

Already set on Samsung? Start with our best Galaxy Z Fold 8 cases for both models, or go straight to the Z Fold 8 Ultra case shortlist.

Every other Z Fold 8 vs Razr Fold comparison stops at the spec table (200MP vs 50MP, 5,000mAh vs 6,000mAh, 45W vs 80W). This one answers the question a foldable owner actually has at switching time: if I move from Samsung to Motorola (or back), does any of my existing gear come with me? The short answer is no, and the long answer is about why cross-brand foldable case ecosystems almost never converge, even when the screens are nearly the same size.

Razr Fold vs Galaxy Fold 8 Ultra: the spec diff

The Razr Fold has the bigger battery, faster charging and a brighter inner screen; the Z Fold 8 Ultra is about 1 mm thinner folded, has the higher-resolution 200MP main camera and uses Samsung's eighth-generation hinge. We've broken this into the changes that matter to the device, then the changes that matter to whether your existing accessories survive the switch. Every line is marked CHANGED, NEW, BETTER or SIMILAR, with the case-design implication where it exists.

Spec Z Fold 8 Ultra Razr Fold Diff Case impact
Price From US$2,099 US$1,899 · A$2,799 RRP in Australia CHANGED Both are sold officially in Australia, so this is a genuine local choice
Folded thickness 8.9 mm 9.89 mm CHANGED A ~1 mm gap = entirely different case mould tooling
Inner display 8.0" 8.1" 2K LTPO SIMILAR Near-identical diagonal, but body proportions and hinge differ; no shared cut
Cover screen 6.5" 6.6" CHANGED Cover-screen lip tolerances need a separate mould
Peak brightness 3,000 nits 6,000 nits (inner) BETTER (Razr) n/a
Hinge generation Samsung's eighth-generation Z Fold hinge Motorola's first book-style hinge (stainless steel) NEW First-generation hinges are still settling, so case clearance needs a wider margin
Camera island Triple: 200MP + 50MP ultrawide + 10MP 3× Triple 50MP, horizontal bar, centred CHANGED Camera cut-out geometry is the single most expensive part of case tooling. There is zero crossover.
Battery & wired charging 5,000mAh · 45W 6,000mAh · 80W BETTER (Razr) n/a
Wireless charging 20W; no built-in magnets listed Qi 1.3, no native magnetic alignment SIMILAR On both phones, a MagSafe-style ring has to come from the case
S Pen / stylus Not supported Moto Pen Ultra US$99, no internal slot NEW (Razr) A stylus case for the Razr needs its own cavity; there is no stylus to carry on the Z Fold 8 Ultra
Software Android 17 / One UI 9, 7 OS updates Up to 7 Android OS upgrades SIMILAR Both have long software runways, so support length isn't the tiebreaker

The two devices share almost nothing that matters to tooling. The camera island, the hinge spine, the cover-screen lip and the folded thickness are all different. A foldable case is not a slab-phone case: the hinge spine is where most of the engineering goes. There is no universal foldable case, and there won't be one until book-style foldables converge on a hinge standard, which we don't expect.

If you stay with Samsung: what carries over

Most of it, if you're coming from a Z Fold 7. The Z Fold 8 Ultra folds to 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm and weighs 215 g, identical to the Z Fold 7, so your cases should carry over once you've checked the camera cut-out. Our Z Fold 7 to Z Fold 8 Ultra case fit guide covers that check. Our product pages list exactly which models each case is sold for: ring cases like the Axon M2 hinge cover case with a rotating metal ring and the Sentinel H1 shock-absorbent ring case are sold for the Z Fold 8 Ultra as well as the Z Fold 7. The standard Z Fold 8 is different: nothing older fits it. What changed between the generations is in Z Fold 7 vs Z Fold 8 Ultra: what changed, or browse our Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra case collection.

Does any Z Fold gear carry over to the Razr Fold?

No. None of it. On published dimensions alone, the Razr Fold's 9.89 mm folded thickness sits about a millimetre outside the Z Fold 8 Ultra's 8.9 mm, and its horizontal camera bar, hinge spine and cover-screen size are all different from any Z Fold. This is not a marketing answer; it's the same answer we'd give a customer who emailed asking. If you switch from a Z Fold to a Razr Fold, you are starting your case collection from scratch.

This is true in reverse too. As Motorola's first book-style foldable, the Razr Fold has a much younger case market than the Z Fold line, and fewer foldable specialists have committed to it yet. Motorola's own accessories are the obvious starting point.

The DXOMARK #1 claim: what we'd tell a Z Fold owner

Motorola markets the Razr Fold as the #1 foldable camera system on DXOMARK. We'd be careful with how much weight that carries: a foldables-only ranking is a much smaller leaderboard than the overall smartphone ranking. The Razr Fold's three 50 MP cameras (including a periscope telephoto) are a genuinely strong, consistent set. The Z Fold 8 Ultra's 200 MP main has the higher-resolution sensor. Different strengths, not a tie.

For case design, none of this matters. The camera bump is the same height whether the photos win shootouts or not.

Should you buy the Motorola Razr Fold or a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold?

Buy the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra if you want the lower-risk foldable, the deepest case range and accessories that carry over from a Z Fold 7; buy the Razr Fold if battery life, charging speed and outdoor brightness matter most. Three honest answers by situation:

If you own a Z Fold 7 and are weighing the Z Fold 8 Ultra: the gains are 45W wired and 20W wireless charging, a 5,000 mAh battery, a 50MP ultrawide and a brighter 3,000-nit panel, and your cases carry over. If your Z Fold 7 still gets you through the day, holding is perfectly reasonable.

If you own a Z Fold 7 and are tempted by the Razr Fold: the 6,000-nit display, 6,000mAh battery and 80W charging are real upgrades, and it's now sold officially in Australia. But you're walking into a first-generation hinge, a younger case ecosystem and a full accessory reset. We'd take the Z Fold 8 Ultra.

If you don't own either and are choosing fresh: Z Fold 8 Ultra if you value case selection, accessory carry-over and Samsung's long hinge track record. Razr Fold if you value battery life, charging speed and outdoor display brightness above everything else. Both promise around seven years of OS updates, so software support no longer separates them.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 vs Motorola Razr Fold FAQ

Should I buy the Motorola Razr Fold or the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold?

For most people, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. It has a mature hinge, a far deeper case range, and Z Fold 7 cases carry straight over. Choose the Razr Fold (US$200 cheaper) if a 6,000mAh battery, 80W charging and a 6,000-nit inner screen matter more to you than accessory choice, and you're comfortable with a first-generation hinge.

Can a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold case fit a Motorola Razr Fold?

No. The folded thickness differs by about 1 mm (8.9 mm on the Z Fold 8 Ultra vs 9.89 mm), the camera islands are laid out differently, and the hinge spine doesn't match. No Z Fold case fits the Razr Fold, and the reverse is also true.

Is the Motorola Razr Fold available in Australia?

Yes. Motorola launched the Razr Fold in Australia in July 2026 at an RRP of A$2,799, through JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and Telstra. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is also sold officially here, so Australian buyers are making a genuine local choice.

Is 6,000 nits on the Razr Fold actually 2× brighter than the Z Fold 8 Ultra in real use?

Peak brightness numbers are measured in high-brightness mode on a small portion of the screen, not full-screen sustained brightness. In direct sunlight, the Razr Fold's inner display should be more usable than the Z Fold 8 Ultra's 3,000-nit panel. In indoor or HDR viewing, the gap is much smaller. The 6,000-nit figure is real engineering; it's not 2× brighter for every workflow.

Does the Razr Fold support MagSafe-style magnetic cases?

Not natively. The Razr Fold uses Qi wireless charging without a magnetic alignment ring, so a MagSafe-style setup needs an aftermarket adhesive ring or a case with a built-in magnet ring positioned to clear its charging coil. The Z Fold 8 Ultra is in the same position: its magnets come from the case too.

Which has better case ecosystem support, Z Fold 8 or Razr Fold?

The Z Fold 8 Ultra, by a wide margin. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold line has far more dedicated case options (magnetic, hinge-cover, MagSafe ring, leather, wallet, keyboard, slim and rugged), and Z Fold 7 cases carry straight over to the Z Fold 8 Ultra. As Motorola's first book-style foldable, the Razr Fold has a much younger case market.

Does the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra support the S Pen?

No. Neither the Z Fold 8 Ultra nor the standard Z Fold 8 supports the S Pen; the S Pen Fold Edition and S Pen Pro only work with the Z Fold 3, 4, 5 and 6. The Razr Fold works with Motorola's Moto Pen Ultra, sold separately.

Our verdict

On Motorola Razr Fold vs Samsung Fold 8, the Razr Fold is a very strong first book-style foldable, and it's now sold officially in Australia. It's also a first-generation product with a first-generation case ecosystem. The Z Fold 8 Ultra is the lower-risk upgrade for any current Z Fold owner (especially from a Z Fold 7, where your cases carry over) and the safer buy for a fresh foldable buyer who wants the deepest accessory choice. From a case designer's chair, what matters most is case ecosystem maturity: cross-brand foldable case parity does not exist and is not coming. Pick the device whose accessory ecosystem you actually want to live in.
